Stickbow Tip of the Week: 3 things every new archer should know

June 11, 2026

When first getting into traditional archery, it is easy to get overwhelmed. There is just a lot to learn. It seems everyone has an opinion and while there is a lot of useful information available out there, there is also a lot of incorrect and polarizing information too.  At Stickbow Supplies, our mission is to bring archery to you. Whatever level you find yourself.  Here are 3 things every new archer should know or know how to do.

  1. Tuning your bow. This encompasses a wide range of knowledge but every new archer should learn how to tune their bow. This includes things such as putting your bow together if it is a take down model, setting your string to your bow, setting brace height, tying nock points, measuring your draw length,  putting on string and bow silencers, selecting an arrow, cutting and inserting or applying your field point or broadhead, fletching your arrows, paper tuning an arrow and ultimately ensuring your bow and arrow are shooting straight.  We will be breaking these all down in more blog posts.
  2. What is your aiming method? Purely instinctive, gap shooting, fixed crawl, face crawling, or a hybrid. The faster you learn what style you want, the faster you will learn to shoot well and archery will become more enjoyable vs frustrating.
  3. Selecting your bow. If you're just starting out, we recommend getting an inexpensive bow. Something you can learn on. Buying a used higher quality bow is also recommended.  While there are some very inexpensive bows out there, spending a little more on a higher quality bow you can grow into is a good idea. You don't need to spend thousands on a new bow though.  Determine if you like the simplicity of a D-Style longbow, a new age longbow, or a recurve.  Will you be traveling and will need to be able to take down your bow to travel with? You will want to look at takedown bows.  Shooting a recurve or longbow is a personal preference but some will agree that a recurve is more forgiving and faster but a longbow offers a quiet, traditional feel and look.  Either way, you will want to try both out and shoot as many styles as you can before you dive in on buying one.

These 3 things every new archer should know cover a lot of the basics.  Over the next several Stickbow Tips, we will breakdown these tips and cover the specifics.
